The speed and height at which a raptor rises depend on the strength of the thermal—a column of rising warm air—and the bird's wing loading (the ratio of body weight to wing area).
1. Rate of Ascent (Climb Rate)
Raptors are masters of "thermal soaring," where they circle within these rising air pockets to gain altitude without flapping.
Average Speed: In typical conditions, a raptor like a Buzzard or an Eagle will rise at a rate of 1 to 3 meters per second (roughly 200–600 feet per minute).
Optimal Conditions: On hot, sunny days with strong convection, thermals can be much more powerful. Large raptors have been clocked rising at 5 meters per second (nearly 1,000 feet per minute) or more.
The Technique: They use "static soaring," holding their wings in a dihedral (slight V-shape) or flat position to maximize lift while banking tightly to stay within the strongest part of the thermal core.
2. Maximum Altitude (Ceiling)
Raptors can reach staggering heights, often limited more by the "thermal ceiling" than their own physical endurance.
Standard Soaring: Most raptors spend their time between 2,000 and 5,000 feet (600–1,500 meters) while hunting or moving locally.
Migration Altitudes: During long-distance migrations, they frequently reach 10,000 to 12,000 feet to catch high-altitude tailwinds.
The Records:
Bearded Vultures: Have been spotted at 24,000 feet (7,300 meters) in the Himalayas.
Rüppell's Vulture: Holds the absolute record for any bird; one was sucked into a jet engine at 37,000 feet (11,300 meters) over Ivory Coast. At this height, the air is extremely thin and cold, but these birds have specialized hemoglobin that allows them to process oxygen with incredible efficiency.
Factors Affecting the Rise
Thermal Strength: Thermals usually dissipate once they reach the "cloud base" (where the air cools enough for water vapor to condense). Raptors often "glide out" of a thermal just before reaching the clouds to find the next lift.
Wing Shape: Broad-winged raptors (like Buteos and Eagles) are better at using slow, tight thermals, whereas long-winged raptors (like Vultures) are optimized for long-distance gliding between thermals.
