International Workshop on Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
16th,17th.& 18th January 2009,Kochi
The Association of Otolaryngologists of India (AOI), Cochin chapter and the Cochin Society Of Otolaryngologists for Medical services( CSOM), organised an international workshop on Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery on 16th,17th, and 18th of January 2009 at the Sunrise Hospital, Kakkanad.
Three eminent ENT surgeons, Prof.Heinz Stammberger, Prof.Gerald Wolf ( Both from Austria), and Dr.Sham Cheuk Lun ( Hong Kong) lead the workshop.
Prof.Stammberger is the foremost proponent and the pioneer of the key hole nasal surgery, named by his team as FESS ( Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery).This novel procedure has revolutionised the management of sinusitis and various diseases related to the nose. His discovery had enabled the key hole approach to the tumours situated on the base of the brain, the lacrimal sac of the eye etc.
439 delegates, not only from almost all the states in India but also from countries like Oman, Australia, and South Africa had attended this mega event.
The workshop included demonsration of the procedures on fresh cadaver by Prof.Stammberger, live surgeries by Dr.Sham Cheuk Lun,and Dr.George Varghese, and discussions from the basics to the latest advancement in the field by the visiting faculty.
The workshop was formally inaugurated by Maj.Gen.EJ Kochakkan,VSM,SM,AVSM, Gereral Officer Commanding ( Army) in Charge of Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka on the 16th afternoon.
Dr.George Varghese ( Cochin Hospital,& GV ENT Centre,Kakkanad,Kochi),President Association of Otolaryngologists of India,kochi chapter was the organising Chairman, & Dr.Paul Abraham ( Lakshmi Hospital, Alwaye), the organising secretary.

Cancer Update from John Hopkins

Avoid carcinogens

· No plastic containers in micro
· No water bottles in freezer.
· No plastic wrap in microwave...
· A dioxin chemical causes cancer, especially breast cancer.
· Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies.
· Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic.
· Use glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food

Allergic Rhinitis Update

An update on allergic Rhinitis treatment was held at Hotel Le Meridian Delhi on July 8,2007.It was attended by nearly 100 prominent ENT Surgeons of North India .The speaker was Dr Anjuli S. Nayak from USA. The talk was elaborate touching various aspects of allergy. It was stressed that a sizable population of adults and children are effected by this debilitating condition and the incidence is on the rise. In India ,26% of population suffers from allergic Rhinitis.
Using existing studies as EBM,the speaker concluded that Loratidine is an effective line of treatment and its safe and non sedating with convenience of once a day dose. The talk was sponsored by Fulford (India) Limited (Alaspan 10mg )

AOI Malabar branch first peripheral meet for the year 2006-07 was held at KANNUR on 27.08.2006. Prof.B.M.Hegde, former Vice Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education(MAHE) was the chief guest and inaugurated the meet. AOI Malabar branch president Dr.Mohan Chandran presided over the meet. Dr.Mohan Kameswaran, Chennai and Dr.Jayakumar, Trivandrum were the guest faculties who spoke on "Advances in FESS" and "Approach to a Dysphonic patient" respectively. There was also a panel discussion on Tympanoplasty and PG paper presentation competition. The meeting was organized by Kannur ENT club and Dr.Arun Divakar gave welcome and Dr.Rejinath Sagar proposed vote of thanks who were the chairman and secretary of the organizing committee. The meeting was attended by over 150 delegates
